Beautiful & Doomed II

"Beautiful and Doomed" is an anthology of short fiction by eighteen Pakistani writers, published in 2022 by Aspiring Pens. The stories span a wide range of genres: literary realism, romance, thriller, mythology, historical fiction, and coming-of-age drama. One story follows a man crushed by guilt after a hit-and-run, who spends years unable to face his mistake. Another traces a bride on the eve of her wedding, mourning the home she left behind during partition. There is a mountain-climbing story about failure and near-death, a magic-realist tale set in a world where spells were once legal, and a Greek myth retelling soaked in ancient curse and longing. Some stories deal with trauma, scarred bodies, and the slow work of accepting oneself. Others are quieter: a girl navigating marriage proposals while holding feelings she cannot name, friends on a chaotic road trip, a narrator falling for the reader of their own book. The title holds all of it together. Each story carries something worth loving and something that resists a clean ending, and that tension is what makes the collection feel honest. This is a book about people caught between who they are and what they carry.
